The Geo Transparency Project envisions playing a vital role in helping socioeconomically disadvantaged communities better understand and address environmental issues. We will listen to and serve our communities as a key collaborator by providing access to geospatial and data resources with Data as a Service (DaaS model). This model provides access to and assists communities with environmental data aggregation, analysis, visualization, and data storytelling.
Geospatial Data Analysis and Mapping
The Geo Transparency Project provides GIS mapping and analysis related to environmental and climate data. Our web-based tools help communities better understand and visualize the environmental risks they face. Each community will have a custom online geospatial data hub that will serve as the clearinghouse for all their needs.
- Interactive maps and applications
- Built from data layers created and maintained by government agencies, academic institutions, and other “official” sources
- Spatial Products
- Radius/buffer analysis
- Existing sensor data
- Documentation of workflows
Community Engagement & Education
We will collaborate with communities, and their partners, to raise awareness about environmental/climate justice issues and empower them to advocate for their rights.
- Hosting workshops/trainings on how to use the provided tools
- Developing educational materials about the issues of concern and the applicable data
- Assisting stakeholders with drafting correspondence/presentations to decision makers about the issues of concern
- Providing assistance to any community partners to help with their efforts
Technical Assistance & Capacity Building
Provide technical assistance and capacity building services to communities to help them build their own GIS capabilities and develop their own environmental/climate justice programs.
- Providing training on data collection and analysis
- Assistance with preparing FOIA requests
- Leveraging open-source data intelligence collection techniques to aid with their mission(s)
- Establishing a train-the-trainer type program to teach one (or more) community members how to manage the data and create their own maps
Policy Advocacy & Research
Assist communities, and their allies, with policy advocacy to promote environmental/climate justice. We will provide support to those advocating for stronger environmental regulations, help with conducting research on the health impacts of environmental pollution, and working to promote equity in government decision-making processes.
